Getting in Shape – With Water
Christmas is coming and the goose is getting fat. But if your own waistline is expanding as well, then dropping a few pounds for the festive party season could be top of your Christmas wish list.
If this seems like an impossible task, and willpower isn’t your strong point, then take heart. The good news is that drinking water can help you lose weight.
Water is one of the most helpful aids around for curbing hunger pangs and revving up your metabolism. So although you won’t be able to snack on chocolate and crisps all day, water can help keep your diet on track.Often the body confuses hunger for thirst, so instead of reaching for your crisps, try drinking a glass of water instead. And because the cells in our body are depleted of energy when we’re thirsty, our bodies demand more food. So drink more water instead and you could find that your hunger abates.
Dehydration is another problem that can contribute to weight gain. The body needs water to function properly, and without water, the metabolism slows down. So drinking more water each day actually contributes to calorie burning. Drink an ice cold glass of water before breakfast and throughout the day at regular intervals. Your metabolism will increase only 10 minutes after drinking, and science shows that 1.5 litres extra of water per day contributes to 17,400 calories burnt over the course of a year. That’s a whole five pounds, without ever stepping foot in the gym!
